It's OK, cd39, I read the post twice before understanding.

G'day there cd39, I haven't said that the current incumbent is running again. I am fully aware of the Twenty Second amendment to the US constitution limiting presidents to a maximum of two terms.

Indeed my second sentence "It is the first time since the fifties that an incumbent president or vice president is not standing for reelection." amply demonstrates my awareness of the limitations.

Hiya H2o

I have been on this site for 5 years and have never posted.
I think it is funny you raise a point about the president running again when he is restricted to 2 terms in office,
As for Chaney or what ever the blah is his name I think he would be shot

You clearly prefer unrepresentative, unaccountable swill appointed at the whim of slightly less representative, less accountable swill?

You _like_ voting for your judges, shillard?

Yeah, vote for Jones, he promises to put away anyone who comes in front of him. Better than that scoundrel Harris who only convicted 70% of people trialled before him. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's good to know that you can buy your way to be a judge there (by having funds for a political campaign). Does wonders for law.

A better system? Here? You're kidding - right?

I don't recall voting for the Governor-General, or the leader of either major political party, or the local judicial officers, or....

The US system is far more representative than our joke of a system - it even provides its citizens with the ability to opt-out should they so desire, virtually eliminating the donkey vote.

We can learn much from the Americans - despite the (largely unjustified and poorly thought-out) criticism often directed their way. But they can take a few knocks - after all, they do have a planet to run.

Being Australian, what happens in the Northern Hemisphere is of little consequence.

Trouble is that our economy is sadly driven by these "northerners".

One wonders if the American public took such close attention to Kevin Rudd being elected to office.

"Kevin Who" would be the response. Meanwhile, if one is so enamoured with American pre-selection or whatever it is known as....just go there! Stay there!

Well the near year of politicking has started. It is the first time since the fifties that an incumbent president or vice president is not standing for reelection.

So any thoughts about who should get the Democratic nomination, Hilary Clinton or Barack Obama?

What about the Republican nomination? Mitt Tomney, Mike Huckbee, John McCain, Fred Thompson, Ron Paul or Rudy Guiliani? A wide open field there!

Of course once the nominees are selected we go through the whole thing again as the yanks vote for a president (well some of them anyway!).

Then after the election in November (first Tuesday after the first Monday) the current incumbent G W Bush will remain in power until the inauguration of the new president in Jan 2009.

I think we have demonstrated a much better system in Australia.

Any comments?
