The huge salaries of these players have to come from somewhere. Once upon a time players had to hold down real jobs as well as their football/cricket/whatever careers. Some of these salaries are outrageous given that they don't actually do anything useful, much like the ludicrous amounts of money payed to actors nowadays. |

I also think the AFL is not that badly priced in comparison to other activities. At least the tickets aren't - we are going to Telstra Dome tomorrow & the tickets for our family of 4 cost approx $45 - as for the food/drink that is another story - absolutely outrageous - so we take our own food & let the kids have one treat each - whichever they chose. All in all we always have a great time as a family & while I can understand that by the time you factor in food/drink/parking/public transport it can add up. However I think compared to a day at the Zoo or even the Royal Show it's not bad overall & there are ways you can minimise the cost. |

Hi Paul in regards to your advertising post, Your views are interesting but are very wrong.
The aim is to get people into the stadium, unfortunately if the game is not sold out the game does not go live in most places which means advertisers dont want to advertise as heavily.
Are far as it goes for advertsing in the stadium you are right they are always looking for new ways but the fans will always be there and they will always be wanted.
Faithyyy - I agree with you I go to many sporting events and I find the AFL pretty cheap.... compare it to a day at Dreamword and I know which leaves me more satisfied. |

I agree Ganges - I love to watch the local teams play at Noosa just after I visit the farmers markets next door...
Cost nothing except for food/drinks at the bar & great local talent...
+ its 150km's to the Gabba |

I agree with you all - this might be worth mentioning. Last Saturday a friend and I went to the Races in Brisbane. The gate charge was $30 per person. We both ordered one of those pre-mix tins of acholhol and they charged us $20 ($10 per can). An to add insult to injury the food was more expensive than any cafe on Racecourse Road and tasted like absolute rubbish. We decided we would never go to the races again. |

Actually, today, rather than going to see the big boys fly (or any other code) go to the local matches which can be much cheaper, if not free. |

When I was a young girl and a teenager my saturdays were spent at the footy. With dad and family when young and with cheersquad when old enough right through to my 20's. Now I am a grandmother and when the grandkids get older would love to give them the footy experience as well, but due to the prices this won't be happening. Footy in our household is a "special occasion event". My son decided on his 23rd birthday to invite those who wanted to help him celebrate to go to the footy. Even with just my husband and myself this was an expensive excercise. I realise as per a previous post, it is the advertising dollar that counts, and I refuse to watch it on the telly. You don't get the atmosphere on the telly, you need to be there. Gone are the days when footy was a family experience. |

Its suprises me how long it has taken footy fans to realise that you are not wanted at the game. The AFL (and other sports for that matter) prefer you to watch it on TV so they can sell the advertising rights (time) at a huge rate.
The more people who watch the TV equals more for advertising which equals more for the AFL business. If you go to the game the AFL is limited by what they can advertise due to space ie wall space.
Now you have timed rotating walls as barriers ie basketball
Why do teams change jerseys when playing away and each year?
Advertising and money from the suckers (supporters)
Why does the game seem to be more stop/start? Not for the players health and not for the game But..
Advertising time

Ahh - my favourite gripe.
Growth & shareholder value - vs - Customer value
It's been a long time since the customer was the reason for a business' existence.
In the old days 'repeat business' and 'customer satisfaction' were the drivers of a product. NOw it is growth targets, profitablity and shareholder dividends.
We all understand that these are part of the equation, but they are not the drivers of the business model. They are the RESULTS of a well executed business model. If the product is no good and/or the customers are not satisfied - the number of transactions will shrink over time.
What do the sharpies of today do? Raise the price to make up the shortfall. A proven and sustainable model (not)! |

As said, it's the cost of any entertainment/attraction. The cost of a visit to the zoo for the same set-up is $103.70 for the entry tickets alone. Then as you say there is the food and drink per person, the souvenirs and other expenses on offer. Or if you want a really high cost, look at Bridgeclimb - it would be $660 just for that group, just to walk up a bridge! |

Exactly the reason we don't go anymore. Even here in Adelaide although we have been told by the AFL that we have the cheapest ticket prices in the land you still don't get much change out of $100 for a family of 4. It's sad that the competition has gone this way for the average family. We now go back to the local league, $10.00 per adult,Kids free, carparking free & much much better style of footy. |

We don't have AFL matches in FNQ but an outing to the movies is reaching well beyond the grasp of the average family. Tickets, popcorn and a drink for a family of 4 is around $80. Ridiculous. |

The cost of a family outing to an AFL match today is now prohibitive for the average Mum, Dad and 2 kids. There are the Match Tickets, Reserved Seating, Footy Record, Food per person, Drink per person, Parking or Public Transport. The expense list goes on.
Do we all feel the pain similarly across each state? How much do you spend? |
