Post subject: Disinterested employee.
Organisation name: VicRoads
Issue type: Complaint
I own 2 cars and a motorcycle.
One of the cars has its registration expiring at the end of April one on the 10th of December and the bike on the 16th of November.
Being only 3 and a bit weeks apart, and close to Christmas, I decided to call Vicroads and have them shift the expiry of one of the vehicles.
I chose to move the car to an August expiry and they sent me out a new registration sticker.
I decided that I would pay this on a Thursday night after work. I finish work at 11pm and it's registration was expiring on Thursday midnight/Friday morning.
Once home I attempted to pay the registration via maxi.com.au but it failed, telling me that there is no registration due on this vehicle.
I tried using all upper and then in lower case yet still no joy, I tried again several times, each and every time it failed.
I shut the browser down and tried a different browser, same result. Perplexed, I decided to use the Vicroads website but it made no difference as it palmed you off to Maxi.com.au anyway.
Tried to call, same result, "no registration is due"
Now as I am going on a riding holiday early January, I decided not to renew the registration on the motorcycle in order to conserve the new tyres that I fitted to the bike.
I gave up trying to pay for my registration and thought, I'll try it again in the morning. No joy.
I start work at 6am and I am on the road at 5.20am. I've got no choice now but to drive an unregistered vehicle and hope for the best.
I tried everything that I possibly could to pay my registration on the car but everything that I did try, failed.
Once at work I called Vicroads to ask why I was unable to pay it online or over the phone using their automated service, they tell me it was due to the fact that the date was altered and that affected the automatic phone and online payments.
When I asked why I was not notified of this, I wasn't given an answer. Asked what would have happened had I been stopped by the police, the reply was "you would have been fined"
I ask the lady why there wasn't a note attached to the registration slip advising that it was not possible to pay it online or via the automated phone service, I was told "don't worry about it, your registration is now paid"
I asked her a couple of times if she would pass on my concerns and be proactive in putting some mechanism in place to prevent this happening to someone else, I was again treated with an 'I don't really care' attitude.
Luckily my registration expired on midnight Thursday and not midnight Friday as I would have been stranded with an unregistered vehicle for the entire weekend.
It is as simple as printing a notice on the renewal slip or including a DL flyer in the envelope when sending out a shortened registration.
I would like Vicroads to put something in place that prevents this happening to the next person.
