I live on my own, so I can control how much electricity I use. I've also done a (basic) energy assessor training course, so I know what electricity certain products use, and my cooktop, hot water, and heating are all on (natural) gas. I have solar now, but the $36.49 is before solar was put on.
I also pay a service charge to have gas connected, which at $127 a year, is actually more than double what the original poster pays for gas bottles.
The only thing I'm not sure about, is does the $54 include rental of the bottles, or is that on top? When my sister was looking at putting in a gas boosted solar hot water service, the bottle rental was $98 a year (although there was only one supplier in the town), so she decided against it.

"If energex tried to charge a maintenance fee for keeping the electricity attached to your house each year i'm sure the outcry would be huge".
We all pay a fee for electricity to be attached to our house, it's called availability charge, and it's about 0.80 cents a day on top of your electricity usage, Is it fair?? NO, but we have to pay it.

I thought all companies charged a fee for keeping electricity connected to your house?
My last bill had a service charge of $46.65 plus GST for 3 months, more than the electricity use of $38.49 for electricity usage.

We've been hit with an annual fee for so called maintenance on the gas bottles for years. Bill arrived yesterday for $54 as an annual fee. Has gone up from $39 last year. Given we're already (last bill) paying $127 per bottle of lpg gas, one would THINK somewhere they'd be able to work out maintenance costs themselves (as an ongoing business expense). but no they hit the consumer with it.
There is no competition where i live so switching is not an option - seems these gas companies can charge what they like. If energex tried to charge a maintenance fee for keeping the electricity attached to your house each year i'm sure the outcry would be huge.
